I. CLASSIFICATION OF CIRCUMSTANCES
|a. ||Rape which is both statutory and forcible is alleged to have
|1. ||Post-pubescent patients may in general be treated as adults,
with certain modifications. The rape victim's advocate should talk
separately, first with the victim and then with the accompanying
parent or other adult (if any) in order to decide whether the adult
is emotionally prepared to be supportive to the patient during
examination and interrogation. A responsible adult who is too
emotionally distraught to be of help to the patient should be provided with another person with whom to talk about the situation,
allowing for ventilation of feelings, and making of practical decisions.|
|2. ||Pre-pubescent patients may require special counseling skills
not necessarily possessed by the rape victim's advocate who is experienced in dealing with adult women on a woman-to-woman
basis. The hospital offering treatment to pre-pubescent rape victims
must have available on 24-hour call a person, ordinarily a woman
mental health professional or skilled paraprofessional, with specific
skills and experience both in communication with emotionally distraught children, and with the specifics of rape counseling in
