THE SECOND DAY OF
On 1 July, Confederates had managed to drive the Federals
into a fishhook like formation on and around Cemetery
Ridge. Though outnumbered and facing an enemy holding
a strong position, Lee elected to launch a brutal attack on
Meade's left the next day. His forces badly mangled the
enemy, but the Confederate general found to his irritation
that the Army of the Potomac refused to budge and almost
patiently awaited his next move.
