Jean Bethke Elshtain is the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996 and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She is the author of more than four hundred essays published in scholarly journals and journals of civic opinion and a contributing editor of the New Republic. Among her books are Women and War (1987) and Democracy on Trial (1995), both published by Basic Books. Democracy on Trial was a New York Times "Notable Book" in 1995.
