Comparing Codes of Ethics:
An Assignment for Developing
Critical-Thinking Abilities

This assignment will help you to understand professional codes of ethics in general, and the NASW Code of Ethics in particular. In addition, it will help you to develop your critical-thinking skills.

Your objective is to thoroughly review and then compare each of several selected professional codes to the NASW Code of Ethics, using each of the other professional codes as paper subheadings. The comparisons should highlight not only general but also some specific similarities and differences. Think of the following questions as you frame each section of your paper. Are there certain terms, ideas, themes, or concepts that are addressed in the NASW code as well as in each of the other codes (for example, confidentiality)? Are there ways that the NASW code and each of the other codes conflict in the ideas or ideals that are advanced? Are there important ideas or ideals that are elaborated in one code but totally omitted or only briefly mentioned in the other codes? Based on your thorough review of each of the codes, what differences do you see among the professions? Did you find anything that surprised you in any of the codes? Explain. Which code do you think might be the most effective? Explain your reasons for reaching your conclusion.

Remember to be direct when making your comparisons: every time you say one code addresses or does not address something, then you must specify the counterpart comparison in the other
