More than ever, Picasso seemed, as Gertrude Stein remarked, like a little toreador leading his retinue, or, as she was to say later in her portrait of him, like Napoleon, followed by four enormous grenadiers. Derain and Braque were both very tall; Apollinaire, tall and stocky; and Salmon certainly wasn't small. But Picasso was the leader, from head to toe.
