doomäˈ məlōnˈ, 1892–1986, American historian and editor, b. Coldwater, Miss. He received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1923 and was an instructor of history at Yale (1919–23) and associate professor (1923–26) and professor (1926–29) at the Univ. of Virginia. He was an editor of the Dictionary of American Biography from 1929 to 1931 and editor in chief from 1931 to 1936. After serving as director of the Harvard Univ. Press (1936–43), Malone was (1945–59) professor of history at Columbia and managing editor (1953–58) of the Political Science Quarterly. Among his books are The Public Life of Thomas Cooper (1926), Saints in Action (1939), Edwin A. Alderman (1940), The Story of the Declaration of Independence (1954), and Jefferson and His Time (6 vol., 1948–82), a multivolume biography of Thomas Jefferson.
