1743–84, hero of the American Revolution, b. Roxbury, Conn. One of the group who, under Ethan Allen, resisted the New York claim to the New Hampshire Grants (now Vermont), he was outlawed by New York authorities. He became a leader of the Green Mountain Boys, and in May, 1775, he gained his claim to fame by the capture of Crown Point from the British. He later took part in the expedition against Canada that failed at Quebec.
