EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

The 149 items in this chapter are intended to be teaching tools. Formats include games; manuals; videos; whole curriculums with teacher’s and student guide, activities, and tests; software packages; posters; interactive CD-ROMs; coloring books; science experiments; even popular songs “remixed” to provide food safety themes. Methods of teaching and types of materials needed vary depending on who is being taught. The materials are categorized mostly into for whom they are intended and their subject area if it is other than general food safety principles. The sections are as follows:

Volunteers at Picnics, Church Suppers, Fairs, Food Banks

Tools for teaching children obviously need to be on a different level than those for adults. Many of the children’s materials are designed to be taught at school. Materials for both children and consumers tend not to become out of date because they teach the basics, which don’t change. Food service worker training materials that are based on the FDA Food Code can become outdated as various provisions, such as recommended temperatures, change. Some of the training materials for food service workers teach the very basics of food safety, while others teach according to a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points system.
