ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
For the reader who would like additional information on Japanese aesthetics,
culture, and literature, the following bibliography should prove useful.
The works listed are intended to supplement the essays included in this col-
lection and are aimed at the general, non-specialist reader. The list moves
from general to specific, beginning with bibliographies, guides, encyclopedias,
to anthologies of literary works, to general background reading, to specific
works about fiction, poetry, drama/theater, and film. There are, of course,
many more works than have been included here, but these works are likely to
be found in most college and university libraries and they provide a general
rather than narrow focus. Also included are those works which might be
most useful to the teacher preparing to teach Japanese literature.Since many articles in scholarly journals tend to be of a more specialized
nature, or focus more on individual works, they are not generally included in
this bibliography. So many works by individual Japanese fiction writers, poets,
and playwrights are now available in translation that it is impossible to list
them all here. (For a comprehensive listing of works available in translation,
see Modern Japanese Literature in Translation: A Bibliography, cited below).
There are also numerous critical studies of individual writers, as well as biog-
raphies and autobiographies which are not included. Many of the titles in
this bibliography have their own bibliographies which will be helpful in
locating more specific studies.
