The ‘theatre’ of Freud from Oedipus to Hamlet is already well known and poetically underpins both the authenticity of his operations and the field of practices these works have generated. The pre-eminent place afforded Shakespeare in Freud’s study attests to his position in a canonical pantheon alongside the complete works of Goethe. Yet the prominence of Shakespeare here and in Freud’s only titled writing on the theatre, ‘Psychopathic Characters on the Stage’, should not obscure a more engaging and multifarious dialogue between psychoanalysis and performance in his work and workplace.
