This book could not have been written without the generous contributions of a host of colleagues, too numerous to list, from all areas of the museum field, both in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. Many have given freely of their time and their ideas and I am sincerely indebted to them. I would also like to pay tribute to many of my students, who, in taking the ideas of the communication courses at the University of Leicester have made them their own and applied them in imaginative and exciting new ways. These ideas, often expressed in essays, have contributed to the development of my own thought.
I would like to thank my colleagues in the Department of Museum Studies, University of Leicester for continued support. Special thanks are due to Jim Roberts for the preparation of the figures.
I gratefully acknowledge the receipt of travel grants from the Establishment Board and the Research Board of the University of Leicester.
