It has been possible to write this book only because of the families who, for many years now, have welcomed us into their homes and their lives and shared their experiences with us. The book is dedicated to them.
The work described here has been carried out as part of the Manchester Down’s Syndrome Cohort Study. All of the past and present members of the research team have contributed. We would particularly like to acknowledge Meg Aumonier, Christina Knussen, Marilyn Lawson, Chris Lennings and Ann Rangecroft. David Reeves advised and helped with the computation and statistical analyses. Professor Chris Kiernan has actively supported our work. Dr Naomi Richman acted as consultant when we were planning Study 4. Her advice and support has been appreciated.
We are grateful to Christina Knussen and Dr Margaret Flynn who provided helpful comments on earlier drafts of the manuscript. Judith Toon and Kate Catahan helped with the typing. Dr Margaret Flynn has also helped in the planning of the book and has encouraged us throughout.
The work described here has been funded largely by the Department of Health and Social Security, with some early support from the Economic and Social Research Council.
