A Note to the Reader

Unless otherwise noted, all translations from the French are my own. Letters are always identified by date and, when there is a choice, they have been cited from the sender's published correspondence. For the reader's convenience, citations from Voltaire's correspondence also include the letter numbers.

Also to assist the reader, I have provided short biographical sketches of the main persons who figure in the story that follows, both philosophes and salonnières. They will be found after the Conclusion.

D. G.
