THERE WERE many valuable manuscript collections utilized in the completion of this study, but the most important was located in the Archives de Masséna. For examining the day-to-day operations of the French army at Almeida and Ciudad Rodrigo from May through August, this collection was unequaled. Volume Ll of the collection provided a registry of all of Masséna's correspondence with Napoleon's chief of staff, Alexandre Berthier, and the minister of war, General Henri Clarke. Moreover, it included his letters to the corps commanders, Ney, Junot, and Reynier; the quartermaster general, Lambert; the ordonnateurs and paymasters; the artillery and engineer commanders, Eblé and Lazowski respectively; and the provisional governors under his jurisdiction as Kellermann, Rouyer, and Dorsenne. Additional letters to Napoleon and King Joseph, orders of the day, instructions for the movement of the army, and Masséna's secret correspondence were also found in this volume. Volumes LII through LVIII included several thousand letters written to Masséna by his corps commanders, quartermaster general, artillery and engineer commanders, provisional governors, specially assigned officers, and even Spanish officials in the service of France.
