Defining ‘small’ takes on different forms in different countries. A European recommendation defines ‘small firms’ as micro, small or medium-sized enterprises. In Britain, firms that employ fewer than 200 workers are defined as small, while in France, Germany and the USA, the figure is 500 (Odaka and Sawai 1999).

Investigators believed the crash was due to a fire sparked by oxygen generators in the jet’s forward cargo hold. It was alleged the hazard could have been prevented had the subcontractor fitted a three-cent safety cap to the generators. The Acting US Attorney Guy Lewis described this as a clear case of ‘putting corporate profits before safety’.

Up until July 2001, the maximum that a tribunal would force a vexatious employee to pay towards an employer’s costs was £500. However, this limit has now been raised to £10,000, while the grounds for ordering such a payment have been broadened. The National Citizens’ Advice Bureau has reported that some employees involved in forthcoming tribunals have received aggressive letters from their employers’ solicitors warning them that they could be liable for thousands of pounds’ worth of costs.
