isomorphically with the statement about which Noble asked. He finds it difficult to find such isomorphic relations with the S-R model. Mandler observed that terms such as input and output are not identical with S and R as theoretical terms, but S-R formulations of the concepts of stimulus and response are changing. This is seen in the contrast between the present discussion of one-trial learning and the one at the last conference. Mandler expressed the conviction that while one-trial learning may not hold, as a general principle, there are conditions under which it almost always occurs.There was some discussion of the term trial for which several definitions can be given. Rehearsal by the subject should not be consistent with the status of a single trial. Deese wondered if the concept of a functional trial would turn out to be necessary.The discussion concluded on the note that recent neurophysiological findings (el. Hernandez-Peon, Scherrer, and Jouvet, 1956), such as the discovery of gamma efferents, can bring attention back and at a peripheral level ( Wickens, Deese) whereas a few years ago attention would have required central processes ( Wickens). A number of other experiments were cited to show the increasing, recent concern with attention (cf. Broadbent, 1957), but Goss, citing the experiment by Eckstrand and Wickens ( 1954), said this would have been no surprise to early S-R theorists like Watson.
