IS EARLY INTERVENTION
EFFECTIVE? SOME STUDIES OF
EARLY EDUCATION IN FAMILIAL
AND EXTRA-FAMILIAL SETTINGS
Urie Bronfenbrenner
THE PROBLEM
Does early intervention have any enduring effects? The 1960's saw the widespread adoption in this country programs of early education aimed at counteracting the effects of poverty on human development. Although some of these programs produced dramatic results during the first few months of operation, the question of long-term impact has remained unaswered for lack of extended follow-up data. Recently, however, research results have become available which shed some light on five questions of considerable scientific and social import:
i. Do children in experimental early education programs continue to gain in intellectual development so long as the education continues, or at least do they maintain the higher level achieved in the initial phase?
