Col. William N. Coler. On Aug. 20, 1861, Brig. Gen. John Pope's hd. qrs. wrote to USG that this force would arrive "this evening or some time tomorrow," and would include a battery of Ill. light art., Maj. Peter Davidson. Copy, DNA, RG 393, District of North Mo., Letters Sent.

This telegram has not been located. On Aug. 23, Pope wrote to Maj. Gen. John C. Frémont. "The enclosed dispatch is respectfully submitted for the information of the General comdg the Dept. I would suggest that Genl. Grant be reenforced by several regiments from this place which under his supervision can be rapidly put in condition for efficient service at such points as may be considered advisable—" LS, ibid., Western Dept., Letters Received.
