Structures of Competition
Table C.1 presents two indices of the structures of competition and the relevant electoral institutions. First, the index of fractionalization measures the concentration of competitive strength among parties. The higher its value, the more dispersed the seats among parties in parliament. Second, the effective number of legislative parties measures the number of “relevant” parties in parliament necessary to form a coalition.
