NOTE ON TRANSLITERATION
In Arabic transliterations long vowels and emphatic consonants are not differentiated in the text from their closest English equivalents. The ayn and
hamza are used. Some Egyptian and Syrian colloquialisms have been used
where the authors deem appropriate, or where correct transliteration of a
text (within the limits of the simplified transliteration system used in this
volume) demands it.
