FOREWORD TO REVISED EDITION
1. The whole problem of dating merits a chapter to itself, but I shall content myself with referring the student to a few recent publications on the subject. Armillas, 1952; Ekholm, 1958; Lathrap, Holden and Coe, 1957, use mainly the archaeological approach. Jimenez Moreno, 1954, 1959, combines archaeology with his study of documents. Wauchope, 1947, attempts also to correlate archaeology with native annals and 1950, 1954, appraises the radiocarbon method in the light of archaeology as does Martinez del Rio , 1957. Crane and Griffin, 1958, 1959; and Libby, 1955, are standard references for radiocarbon dating and new results will continue to be published, as by Flint and Deevey, 1959. See also McNutt and Wheeler, 1959. Linné, 1956, has published an interesting and perhaps the most reliable date on Teotihuacan, but more are promised ( Griffin, personal communication).

It had been hoped that the new method might settle for all time the differences of opinion about Maya correlations, but a glance at Andrews, 1959, and Satterthwaite, 1960, to mention only two recent papers, shows the scholars as far apart as ever. The "Olmec" Stela C at Tres Zapotes, the Tuxtla statuette, etc., can give us only partial help if we cannot agree how to interpret them. For data on a new method of dating obsidian the student is referred to Friedman and Smith, 1960, and Evans and Meggers, 1960; and on the possibility of dating pottery by thermoluminescence, to Kennedy , 1960. There have also been experiments with the dating of bone by fluorine, Cook and Ezra-Cohn, 1959. Another seemingly very accurate method of dating rocks and structures like hearths and kilns is described by Cook and Belshé, 1959.

CHAPTER I

For recent general writings on early man in America see Martinez del Rio , 1953; Armillas, 1957; Howells, 1959; Willey, 1960 (which has a fine bibliography); and Wormington, 1957. A good popular account of South
