mentation of management practices found among Chinese SOEs will be detrimental to the performance of the Shenlong JVC, leading to low efficiency and poor competitive ability. The shift from clan, before the communist takeover, to bureaucracy, and then to fief, has been a failure. However, Shenlong can benefit from the strategic use of the natural advantages that already exist in traditional Chinese cultural practices. The preference for clan structures and the positive aspects of a preference for flexible networks suggest that these should be seen for what they are: natural advantages that will enhance the performance of both SOEs and JVCs in the future.
