life. The early years and the North African journey have been closely examined in Jean Delay's La Jeunesse d'André Gide (1869-1893) (1956-1957). Claude Martin's La Maturité d'André Gide (1977) provides a remarkable sequel. Auguste Anglès's awesome André Gide et le premier groupe de la Nouvelle Revue Française (1978-1986) is an important historical examination of the intellectual movement and of Gide's role in promoting pluralism and diversity in French intellectual life.
