Bettina Knapp's 1980 work is the best book in English on the subject; she devotes two chapters in Part I to German elements in Nerval and the entire Part II to the Voyage en Orient. The magisterial three-volume Pléiade edition of Nerval's Oeuvres complètes (1984, 1989, 1993) contains not only a presentation of “Nerval, tout Nerval, seulement Nerval” but the present state of scholarship on the works.
