Bertrand de la TourIf [you preach] to those going to war or into battle or those taking the
cross against the infidels.
|1. ||You will not be afraid of them, because the Lord your God is with you,
Deuteronomy 20. Because the outcome of war is variable, as it says in 2
Kings, often a strong enemy attacks, but the greatest obstacle is the timid
spirit of the fighter. These three things, since they usually do not happen
undeservedly, provide the cause of fear; in order to cut them out of the
hearts of the fighters, the prophet addressed the whole army by saying: You will not etc., with which he drove away the timidity of cowardice,
scorned the fear of pride, and showed the giver of victory.|
