relative weaknesses in the semantic/syntactic aspects of communication, whereas the other group had the opposite profile. Each group contained children with a wide range of absolute skill levels. However, most of the children with SLI and NLI were found in the first group. These results suggest that the patterns of individual differences that underlie normal levels of communication development may extend into the domain of atypical development. Additionally, these results allow for the existence of a group of children similar to those described as pragmatically impaired by Bishop.
