William Lloyd Imes was born on December 29, 1889 in Memphis, Tennessee, to Benjamin A. Imes, a minister, and his wife, Elizabeth Wallace Imes. He attended Fisk University where he received both a B.A. and an M.A. In 1912 he traveled to New York City to study at the Union Theological Seminary, from which he received a B.D. In 1915, Imes earned an M.A. from Columbia University. In the same year he married Grace Virginia Frank; the couple had three children. Lincoln University
