Elizabeth A. Regosin is an associate professor of history at St. Lawrence University and the author of Freedom's Promise: Ex-Slave Families and Citizenship in the Age of Emancipation.

Donald R. Shaffer is an assistant professor of history at Upper Iowa University and the author of After the Glory: The Struggles of Black Civil War Veterans, which won the 2005 Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship.
