Bibliography

With the exception of some out-of-the way items and one or two literary classics, the following is a complete list of the works cited, however tangentially, in the text of this book. In addition, it contains the sources for some of the less accessible musical examples. It is merely intended to amplify fragmentary citations and makes no claim to do justice to the subject. That for a book of this nature, would require a volume in its own right.

Note that collections of works by various authors are entered under title rather than editor or compiler.
