This book is a composite of parts of several previously published books of mine. Each has gone through several printings and editions. None was written in particular to meet the educational requirements of beginning students in New Testament studies. Self-evidently, none of them, read cover to cover, would serve very well in the setting of elementary courses in the New Testament and earliest Christianity. They intersect with, but arc not devoted to, that subject. That is why I have chosen to present excerpts, each selected for a particular educational task.
In every instance I have made very substantial revisions. Chapter 2 has not been published previously at all.
I am grateful to my friend, Mr. Bernard Scharfstein, publisher of KTAV Publishing House, Inc., for permission to reprint the designated sections of three titles of mine under his imprint. I own all copyrights.
