Chapter 6
CHARACTERISTICS OF
CREATIVE PEOPLE
Processes discussed in previous chapters—fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration—are all part of creative action. They can be improved through training and are especially important in divergent thinking. This chapter provides information about other cognitive and personality characteristics that are common among creative individuals and highly important in the creative process.
Cognitive Characteristics
Tardif and Sternberg (1988) surveyed literature on creativity and developed a chart listing the most commonly mentioned cognitive characteristics of creative people. Few, if any, creative individuals would have all of these traits. The chart Tardif and Sternberg developed after consulting 16 sources by various authors, indicates the number of researchers who referred to each characteristic. The following are those characteristics listed by a minimum of four sources:
Originality
Flexible and skilled decision maker
Articulate and verbally fluent
Creative in a particular domain
