How to Use This Guide

Organizing the vast comment on pornography and ancillary, but related, representations of sexuality and gender is difficult. The best scheme begins with historical, bibliographic, and broad theoretical approaches, moves to comment on specific genres arranged by communication media, and concludes with overviews of research and policy. Though I hope the merits of this structure will be evident, some redundancy has been inevitable, in part because historians and commentators often make forays into different genres and periods. To assist the reader I have placed "See Also" notations to other chapters where I think they might help.

The Guide has been divided into twenty-one chapters arranged in three volumes, with complete table of contents reproduced in each volume. The sequence is roughly from general to specific, with the first volume offering the broadest view. Chapter 1 is a chronology of significant dates in the history of American pornography. Leaving aside a brief introduction and a reflection on the nature of pornography, the first volume begins with a history of American pornography that discusses pornographic media as they become popular: books, art, and magazines precede photography, film, dance, and the Internet. Should you not find what you are looking for at first glance, look further in Chapter 3, A Brief History of American Pornography. Bibliographies, indexes, and encyclopedias (Chapter 4) are broken down into categories for convenience, on the assumption that the reader may wish to locate a starting point for research. As Chapter 5 makes clear, context is important; here are other starting points, located in historical commentaries on various issues and sectors of culture. Chapter 6 outlines major theoretical positions (e.g., aesthetic, technological) on the subject of sexual representation.

The remaining sections in volume I are intended as fairly quick references.
