Phonemes (/ /) are listed alphabetically for each language, with descriptions of their main allophones (" ") and references to sections on their articulation or behavior. Alternative symbols used by some linguists (often with conflicting values) are shown in parentheses following the symbols used in this book, which are those of the International Phonetic Alphabet except

for IPA . Other formalisms are listed in the last two sections.
