About the Author
David A. Gerber is Professor of History at the University at
Buffalo, State University of New York. He is the author and editor of,
among other works, Black Ohio and the Color Line, Disabled Veterans in History, Anti-Semitism in American History, and The Making
of American Pluralism: Buffalo, New York, 1825–60. His research has
concentrated on the problems of personal and social identities among a
wide variety of Americans, including immigrants, elites, disabled veterans of war, Catholics, and Jews.
