Perception of Theory
Application Around the WorldThis paper is written on the basis of my experiences and my knowledge
of events related to the use of self-care deficit nursing theory around
the world. Some generalizations offered in the paper are relevant to
the use of any theory. The writing of this paper was deferred in order to
complete other pressing work. When I was ready to write, a health problem
interfered. For these reasons the paper lacks detail about dates and other
matters, which I am sure some of you can supply. Perhaps the paper will
be a stimulus to pursue the ideas presented and for dinner guests to
make contributions.Application is understood as putting something to practical use. Theory
refers to self-care deficit nursing theory with its constituent theories of selfcare, self-care deficit, and nursing system. It also refers to the conceptual
constructs within the general theory and the early conceptual model of
nursing. Perceptions of theory application around the world can be expressed in terms of three stages of applications:
|1. ||The stage of dissemination of the theory to potential users|
|2. ||The stage of becoming a user|
|3. ||The stage of use of the theory in nursing practice, nursing research,
continued theory development and theory refinement, development
of nursing technologies, and nursing education|
This chapter consists of preliminary notes preparatory to a self-care conference presentation in
Toronto, Canada, in June 1990.
