Nurse Psychotherapist
1. Basic description —Nurse psychotherapists work in a therapeutic relationship with their patients on either a one-to-one basis or in small therapy groups. Therapists form therapeutic alliances with their patients in order to help them to decrease their symptoms and to return to pre-illness level of function. Nurse psychotherapists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, and independent practice.
2. Educational requirements—RN preparation plus a master’s degree and preparation as an advanced practice nurse. National certification by the ANCC in specialty.
3. Core competencies/skills needed:
Advanced clinical skills in the area of psychiatric/mental health nursing
Ability to practice independently in areas such as medication management and psychotherapy
Ability to integrate research and theory into the practice of psychotherapy
Ability to provide individual psychotherapy and psychiatric assessment
Ability to integrate nursing science, computer science, and informatics in the provision of care
Works collaboratively with other specialty groups
4. Compensation—Varies with place of employment and geographic location in the hospital setting; independent practice consultation $120 to $150 per hour.
