In this chapter students explore key topics in contemporary America. It begins with an over-
view of the Rights Revolution and an analysis of Lyndon Johnson's decision to escalate the
Vietnam War. The final two lessons ask students to take a broad view of American history.
First, they debate the relationship between rights and security in wartime. Finally, they utilize
what they have learned to compare life at the beginning of the 20th century with that in
