IN THIS BOOK I quote speakers directly from transcribed recordings, or, in the few cases where recording was not possible, from detailed field notes. In some instances I add punctuation and remove the redundancies of spoken language to enhance readability. Given the personal content of gamblers’ interviews, I use pseudonyms they chose for themselves. I attempt to further conceal identities by changing certain details in their narratives.
I use the real names of gambling industry representatives when quoting from published articles in trade magazines, or from presentations delivered at trade show meetings (publicly available at libraries or for purchase online). I use their real names when quoting from my own interviews unless they spoke to me off the record or explicitly asked me not to disclose their identities, in which case I designate them by means of anonymous terms such as “a game designer” or “a gambling executive.”
