The spelling, punctuation and capitalization of all quotations taken from contemporaneous manuscripts and printed books have been modernized. However, the actual spelling of titles of books printed before 1800 has been retained in footnote citations and in the Select Bibliography, although punctuation and capitalization have been modernized. Wordy titles have been shortened with the omissions indicated by ellipses. Where the author has used different editions of the same work, the actual edition consulted is cited in the footnote, but only the earliest edition or the most accessible modern edition is listed in the Bibliography.
The year is assumed to begin on 1 January rather than 25 March. The day and the month are given according to old style or new style and so indicated where such precision is possible.
