Write It Up
Cover Letters, Résumés, Thank-You
Notes, and Other Correspondence
What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure.—Samuel Johnson
(English poet, critic, and writer)
WRITE IT UP! This is what recruiters say shortly after an offer has been accepted and a start date has been confirmed. However, before achieving this great feat, as you well know by now, the search process is a lengthy and intense one. Whether I am actively seeking candidates or screening submissions, my decision to pursue them is greatly impacted by their written correspondence. As an image consultant, my intuition formulates opinions on how the 3-D version of the written word will look, act, and sound before the person actually comes in. Cover letters, résumés, executive summaries, and thank-you notes are like advertisements in a magazine or banner ads on your computer screen. They are the coming attractions of a full-length movie. I, along with many of my recruiting colleagues and inhouse recruiting managers, as discerning audience members, will not give further consideration to someone if we don’t like the preview.
