Acknowledgments

Chapter 1 was not published prior to the first German collection of Dibelius’s essays. It is titled in German “Die Apostelgeschichte im Rahmen der urchristlichen Literaturgeschichte,” and is the only chapter produced for the Urchristliche Literaturegeschichte, which Dibelius proposed to write for Neue Theologische Grundrisse, edited by Rudolf Bultmann.

Chapter 2 was first published as “Der erste christliche Historiker,” Schriften der Universität Heidelberg 3 (Heidelberg: Springer, 1948), 112–25. Dibelius delivered it as the “University Lecture” in Heidelberg on February 14, 1947.

Chapter 3 was first published as “Die Apostelgeschichte als Geschichtsquelle,” FF 21/23 (1947) 67–69.

Chapter 4 was first published as “Stilkritisches zur Apostelgeschichte,” in Eucharistērion: Studien zur Religion und Literatur des Alten undNeuen Testaments. Hermann Gunkel zum 66. Geburtstage, dem 23. Mai 1922 dargebracht von seinem Schülern undFreunden, 2 vols., edited by Hans Schmidt, FRLANT 36 (Göttingen: Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht, 1923) 2.27–49.

Chapter 5 was first published as Die Reden der Apostelgeschichte und die antike Geschichtsschreibung, SHAW.PH 1949 (Heidelberg: Winter, 1949).

Chapter 6 was not published prior to the first German collection of Dibelius’s essays. It is the only completed part of a larger work Dibelius planned on Paul (not to be confused with the small Goshen volume which he published in 1951), which had the projected title Paulus der radikale Christ (Paul the Radical Christian).
