LET’S TAKE A BREAK from ethics, eligibility, and other hot-button issues to discuss a few fundamental matters that arise “under the hood” when you contract with the federal government. We can’t promise that this chapter will be the most exciting portion of the book, but like the rest of the material we have covered, the topics we will discuss are important to your small business’s success in the federal marketplace.

First, this chapter covers the registration numbers you must obtain and the databases you must enter in order to receive a government contract. If you’re an experienced contractor, you might be tempted to skip this section, but give it a read anyway—it’s not too long, and you might learn a thing or two about just how important these registrations can be.

Next, the chapter delves into what happens when your company’s ownership changes in the middle of contract performance, and how to go about transferring a government contract from one company to another.
