Index
Not every proper name occurring in this book has been indexed; e.g. not those of
individuals named only once in the text, unless of intrinsic interest or importance;
nor, as a rule, of authors cited in the notes. References are given, however,
selectively, to some citations of some authors, ancient and modern, whose contri-
butions are particularly important, especially on matters of controversy, or who
are themselves criticised, or who, like Aeschylus or Pindar, themselves belong
to the period. References to later history are not indexed; nor are passing allusions
to matters treated elsewhere; e.g. Panaitios of Tēnos is mentioned three times for
one exploit, but indexed once. References to men of a city or country are in-
dexed under its name.References of the form (e.g.) 288 n24, without stops, indicate that the infor-
mation indexed is in the note.Vowels long in Greek are indicated below (as in the text, on their first occur-
rences), with the exceptions of diphthongs, final -e and, in men's names,-as, -es
and -on, which are always long. Doric names are given in Doric forms, e.g. Leōnidas, Lātychidas (in Herodotos,
Leonides, Leutychides).The following abbreviations are used in the Index: Ath. = Athens, Athenians.
Carth. = Carthage, Carthaginians. D. = Darius. d. = daughter. f. = father.
K. = King. Gk = Greek. P. = Persians. s. = son. Sp. = Sparta, -ns.
X. = Xerxes.
