Every facet of South Africa is complex: its people, politics, economy, and even geography. To get some sense of the country's recent history and momentous change, an examination of South Africa's background, divisions, and the internal and external pressures on the South African government is necessary. Through this approach, this book attempts to give a broad picture of the political and social factors that influenced the end of apartheid. It also explores as much as possible the actual events that signified the change from government by racial division to government through unity and political and social liberty.
The history of the South African state provides understanding of the source of racial divisions that became part of government legislation in 1948. Explanation of the separation of groups -- and groups within groups -- shows how the apartheid system developed and operated. By the same token, examination of group separation shows the increasing pressure these divisions put on the apartheid system and the rise of resistance to apartheid. A discussion of the political parties that arose before and during apartheid further highlights the divisions within South Africa. Pressure and resistance were matched by growing international pressure on the South African government in the 1970s and 1980s, which contributed to the system's collapse. An overview of recent events since the 1994 free election reveals the achievements and problems of South Africa's postapartheid government.
