Preface

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Conference held at Hofstra University in March 1984 was the third in a series of Presidential Conferences marking a five-year celebra tion of Hofstra's fiftieth anniversary. The aim of the series was to offer a central ized effort to study the lives, careers, and administrations of the Presidents of the United States who held office during the years of our University's life.

The preceding conferences, on Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, established a high standard of scholarly excellence which was continued in the third of these events. In addition to the formal presentations, our knowledge of Dwight David Eisenhower was enhanced by the presence and participation, in forums and roundtable discussions, of Eisenhower biographers, military col leagues, former officials of the Eisenhower administration, leaders of other governments, and, of course, the Eisenhower family. We are enormously grateful to all of them for their invaluable and good-spirited assistance.

Eric J. Schmertz Dean, Hofstra University School of Law Director, Dwight D. Eisenhower Conference
