have not examined relational pragmatics.

We seem to be left with two related, but competing implicit definitions of the conversational episode. One is a topical/structural definition that may be derived from the discussion above: A conversational episode is the structural elaboration of a main topic across two or more successive segments of subtopics. The other definition is more functional: A conversational episode is the coordinated achievement of a functional main goal through successive segments involving subsidiary goals. NOTE
1.
This episode was more recently "re-performed" by actors who worked from the transcript and original tape recording in an attempt to bring the conversation to life for audiences. It was part of a full length "empirical comedy," Conversation Pieces, taken largely from couples' conversations collected by the author of this chapter and directed by him at Southern Illinois University. An account of the production was published in The Drama Review ( Crow, 1988).
