The cross-references to notable women who appear as individual entries themselves are in boldface their first time of appearance in an entry. In the back matter, under "Notable Women by Title, Occupation, or Main Area of Interest," the reader will find that many entries are listed under more than one heading, as many of these women served multiple roles and occupations in their public and private lives. Note, however, that not all of these associations are necessarily listed in the initial entry description--just the one or ones of major importance in describing the individual. Lastly, under "Notable Women by Country or Region," also in the back matter, some women are listed under more than one country or region, owing to their birth in one and influence in another. If no parentheses follow the entry's name, she is listed only by her birth country. In the case of a dual listing, the country or region of birth is indicated in parentheses followed by an asterisk (*) and the country or region of influence is in parentheses followed by a dagger (†).
