of power as well as hinting at a surrender of objectivity. In Dal's case the entwined fates of writer and worker result in a mad and aesthetically unorthodox novel, where power remains mercurial at best. In these novels of 1988 Oren and Dal, by focussing on the politics of writing, demonstrate a distinct need for acknowledgment and understanding in the cultural realm on their own terms. In view of the contemporary political situation it is important to note that both novels were written before German unification, and before the Persian Gulf War. It remains to be seen how these Romanautoren [novel writers] will be affected and perceived as Turks in the new Germany and in the "New World Order."
