In his dissertation James Jones considers works from the literary canon
and works by self-identified homosexuals during the early twentieth century
(which are not always mutually exclusive) in their portrayal of homosexuals.
There is little representational variance between portrayals of homosexual
characters by self-identified homosexuals, suspected homosexuals, and
heterosexuals, most of which appear to conform to the early twentieth-century
contemporary medical, literary, and psychological models.
Throughout Greenberg's work on the social construction of
homosexuality, the concept of a feminine man with regard to male
