University of Bologna, at Bologna, Italy; founded in the 11th cent. It originated as a school where law books brought from Ravenna were interpreted. It has faculties of law, political science, economics and commerce, arts and philosophy, education, medicine, industrial chemistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, mathematics, statistics and demography, physics, and natural sciences.
